Liposuction / Liposculpture

Liposuction is a technique for excess fat removal that can help:

  • Contouring the body shape
  • Tighten sagging skin
  • Reduce skin rolls
  • Eliminate extra fat in resistant areas around the body
  • Smooth out fat pockets in areas of stubborn fat.

Liposuction involves inserting a cannula via tiny incisions and working it underneath the skin above the muscles. The isolated area of excess fat is then artfully removed to leave behind a pleasing body contour.

Additional modalities such as ultrasound may be added to improve the overall effect. Fat transfer can be performed to add volume to any areas of deficiency.

Liposuction is not to be mistaken for a weight loss tool.

Some possible complications and risks associated with liposuction may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Skin surface may be irregular, have ripples or uneven contours
  • Scarring
  • Numbness or a change in skin sensation
  • Skin discoloration, swelling or other changes in skin pigmentation
  • Legs may have persistent swelling
  • Fat clots or blot clots may form, which may travel to the lungs that can be life threatening
  • Friction burns or other possible damages to the nerves or skin
  • Additional surgery may be required to revise complications.

How much pain will I be in after liposuction?

There is usually minimal discomfort after liposuction, and this can easily be controlled with simple analgesia. You will need to wear a garment continuously for the initial two weeks after surgery to help control your swelling. To continue to minimise your swelling and to facilitate the flattest and firmest body contour possible, we strongly advise patients to continue to wear their compression garments for six weeks. Lymphatic drainage massage is an excellent aid to help remove swelling quickly. Bruising may be present for a period of up to two weeks post-surgery.

Will liposuction results be instantly obvious?

Final result from liposuction may take several months to show and recovery may continue for up to a year. Temporary numbness in the liposuction areas is normal and can be present for up to a year after surgery.

How quickly can I return to exercise after liposuction?

You should resume normal exercise as soon as possible as this helps with skin tightening. Most patients return to work within a few days of surgery.
