Revision Breast
Augmentation

Revision breast augmentation corrects problems that result from a previous breast augmentation surgery or dissatisfaction from the results of a previous breast augmentation. Women may also seek revision breast augmentation because their personal cosmetic goals change. The other reasons you might consider this procedure include:

  • Changing the size, shape or position of the breast implant
  • Giving the breasts a more natural and symmetrical shape and feel
  • Correcting capsular contracture that results from scar tissue around the implants
  • Correcting a double bubble (a crease across the lower part of the breast giving the appearance of two breast mounds)
  • Leaking or ruptured implants
  • Hardening or rippling of implants
  • Deflation of saline implants
  • Dissatisfaction with a previous augmentation.

Dr Bill Lyon commonly sees women who are unhappy with their current breast augmentation or had a surgery that did not meet their expectations. It is essential to communicate with your surgeon so you can be sure to get the results you want.

A revision breast augmentation can be a more involved and difficult procedure than an initial breast augmentation, due mainly to the changes resulting from the initial operation. However, your surgeon will discuss your concerns, expectations and desired results and give you some realistic advice on what can be achieved from a revision breast augmentation surgery. He will do everything he can to ensure the journey for your revisional breast surgery is smooth and successful.

What are the main reasons for having revision breast augmentation?

  • There may have been a simple wound healing problem or that the breast tissue has stretched post operatively.
  • Progressively after surgery you may have noticed that your implants have moved or drifted away from their original position causing asymmetry. The most common movement is for your implants to move down and out, resulting in a wider gap between your breasts and a lack of volume in the upper pole. The most common reason for this movement is aggressive upper body exercise in the early post-operative period.
  • Occasionally despite long consultations with your surgeon about your desired outcome and your ideal breast size, the result delivered by your breast augmentation is not what you expected, and you would like to change your breast size or shape.

What is the recovery time for revision breast augmentation?

You should allow sufficient time for your body to heal and have arranged time away from work for a minimum of 2 weeks after surgery for minor revision and 6 weeks away from work for more significant breast revision surgery. If you have young children at home, you will need to coordinate for someone to help you in their care for 2 weeks after minor surgery and 6 weeks for more significant revisional surgery.

Who is a good candidate for breast implant revision?

Someone who has a clear understanding of the result they are seeking both in breast size and shape.

Who should not have breast implant revision?

We would not recommend you undergo breast revisional surgery whilst you are pregnant or breast feeding, if you have a serious illness or infection, if you have breast cancer or if you have an abnormal mammogram.
