Lip Enhancement

Many people are born with wonderful full lips, where others may have never had the desired shape or size or noticed that with time their lips are thinner than what they once were.

Enhancing lips is one of Dr Bill’s favourite injectable, whether it is returning the lip to the shape and volume you once had or improving on what you now have or never had.

Patients initially may need further dermal filler from 1 to 3 months until the desired shape is achieved and then will require replenishment every 6 to 12 months. Initially

Generally, unless specified most lip enhancements in Dr Lyon’s hand will appear completely natural once the swelling has settled in a few days.

Most side effects of lip injections are temporary, like

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Redness and increased sensitivity in the injected areas
  • Slight bleeding at the injections’ site
  • Lip asymmetry (some parts of the lip are bigger than others), this is easily rectified when swelling has settled

Sometimes, side effects can be more serious. If you notice at least one of them, get in touch immediately:

  • Recurrence of Cold Sores;Lumps in the lips;
  • Ongoing swelling and bruising (lasting from one week and more);
  • Allergic reaction (include itching, redness, or swelling).
  • As with any filler injection, Skin necrosis (ulceration or loss of skin from disruption to blood flow)  & Blindness or possible strokes are exceedingly rare but have been reported

How long do lip injections last?

This depends on how much a patient gets, their metabolism, the desired plumpness, and the product used, but you can usually expect anywhere from six months to three years, on average.

Do lip injections hurt?

Dr  Lyon can numb the area around your lips with either a topical anesthetic (numbing cream) or with nerve block (an injection into your gums just like a dentist would do before filling a cavity). Once numb, you’ll feel a little prick, slight pressure, and a dull kind of throbbing.

What do I need to know before getting lip fillers?

Before your lip injection appointment, make sure to avoid blood thinners. Thinner blood will make the area more prone to bruising and bleeding, so 10 days prior, stop taking painkillers (e.g., aspirin or ibuprofen), fish oil, and vitamin E—and, yes, stop drinking alcohol, which also thins your blood. And anyone who has a history of cold sores should take their prevention medication two days before the procedure, because it could trigger a flare-up.

What should you not do after lip injections?

Stay out of the gym for at least 24 hours. You should avoid activities that increase blood flow to your face, like getting a massage or facial or doing headstands, which can add to the swelling.
